Technical analysis
The ACS712 measures current by Hall effect in series in the conductor, with 2,4 kV RMS galvanic isolation between power and measurement. It reads AC as well as DC, up to 80 kHz of bandwidth: it is the simple sensor for instrumenting the consumption of a motor, a heater or a low-voltage supply.
Limits: you must cut the conductor to insert it (unlike a clamp), and its sensitivity (66 mV/A) gives modest resolution on small currents — the 1,5 % error at 25 °C degrades with temperature. For a non-invasive measurement on an existing line you do not want to open, the SCT-013 clamp is the right choice. The ACS712 shines when you design the circuit and can integrate it in series.
