Technical analysis
The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W brings a real quad-core Linux in a tiny form factor and at very low cost. The jump from an ESP32 is qualitative: Python, OpenCV, containers, camera drivers — the whole Linux ecosystem becomes available. For lightweight edge vision (display reading, counting, presence) or a protocol gateway, it is the Linux entry point.
Its 512 MB of RAM is the real limit: a modern vision model is cramped there, and it has no hardware accelerator. For serious real-time inference, you add a Coral USB, or move to the Raspberry Pi 5 (memory, PCIe) or even the Jetson Orin Nano (CUDA). The Zero 2 W is the tool of frugal edge, not of heavy computation.
